Cape Lookout
Cape Lookout National Seashore, North Carolina
This is an unusual place to visit. The National Seashore is completely deserted
and inaccessible by car. There are no roads, no concession stands, no water,
and little shade. Catch a ferry from the ranger's office on Harker's Island
(919-728-2250 or 3866), or choose from many of the private boats that will
drop you off on Cape Lookout and pick you up at a designated time.
The tower is closed, but you can explore the grounds.
Cape Lookout was built in 1859.
It survived an attempt to blow it up during the Civil War.
The unusual diamond pattern was added in 1873, and the light was automated
in 1950.
