If you've only got a half hour or so for your grand tour of lighthouses,
these are my
suggestions for the ones to visit. Yes, I know it's more than ten! Lights are on this list because they are
grand historic lights, or are in dramatic locations that are very special to
visit,
and partly because I got some good photos. This list may change from time to
time!
- Cape Hatteras, North Carolina
- The mighty Hatteras is the King of Lights. Recently saved from falling in the ocean.
- Heceta Head, Oregon
- Heceta is Oregon's jewel, and the photos for this visit came out just right.
- Montauk Point, New York
- Montauk is celebrating its bicentennial in 1996. This Colonial-era light is
magnificently preserved.
- Point Bonita, California

- Pemaquid Point, Maine
- The morning light at Pemaquid is so soft, and the coast so rugged ....
- Split Rock Light, Minnesota
- Way up on the north sshore of Lake Superior, this is a gorgeous site. You could spend a couple of days vacationing at this lighthouse state park.
- Whitefish Point Light, Michigan
- One of my favorite sites, because of the incredible museum, the unusual colored rocks on the Lake Superior beach, the perfectly restored tower and keeper's house ....
- Marshall Point, Maine
- The Marshall Point Light is very photogenic, sunset or sunrise.
- Ocracoke Island, North Carolina
- Ocracoke Light is small and unassumning, but the charm of this isolated island
is unmistakable ... always makes the Top U.S. 10 Beaches list.
- Highland Light
- Also called Cape Cod Light, Highland goes back to the 1700's. Thoreau visited
in the mid 1800's. Successfully rescued from beach erosion in summer 1996.
- Monhegan Island Light, Maine
- Monhegan Island is one of those special places. Take a look ....
- Grand Haven, Michigan
- Grand Haven is a quintessesntial Great Lakes pier light, and a wonderful place to visit.
- St. Augustine, Florida
- St. Augustine has the lighthouse, the beach, and the rest is history.
- South East Light, Block Island, Rhode Island
- Southeast Light is a distinctive light in a distinctive location, and recently
rescued from oblivion.
