Sandy Point Shoal Light
Chesapeake Bay, Maryland

Sandy Point Shoal Light is located just north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, on the western shore of the bay. It's easily visible from the park, located about a mile offshore. The photo above was taken from the park with a telephoto lens.

The tower was built in 1883 and is known as an iron and concrete submerged caisson style. The light is still operational, althoug it's original 4th order lens has been replaced with a 300mm plastic and solar-powered optic. The 2.5 story keepers quarters is integral to the tower, and is in the architectural style known as 2nd Empire.
