Middle Island Light Station
Alpena, Michigan
Halfway between Presque Isle to the north and Thunder Bay to the south, Middle
Island is about two miles offshore. Built in 1905, the 77 foot tower has been
enjoying a renovation over the past few years, thanks to the Middle Island
Lighthouse Keepers Association. The lightstation also includes the keeper's
quarters, oil house, and fog signal building, all of which are in disrepair.
MILKA holds an annual conference with tours of the light, a picnic, Lake Huron
cruise, and other events. The festivities are held on the second Saturday and
Sunday of August.
Thanks to Marvin Theut, president of MILKA, for the photo.
